外傷、熱傷、膵炎、外科手術などによって生じる全身性の炎症反応。以下の4項目のうち2 項目以上該当すれば診断される¹。
①体温＞38℃または＜36℃
②心拍数＞90回/分
③呼吸数＞20回/分またはPaCO ₂＜32Torr
④白血球数12,000μL以上、ないし4,000/μL以下、あるいは未熟顆粒球が10％以上
